How it works

Start it however you like

Upload a photo online, or bring the piece in. Nothing gets cut until you’ve seen it.

Get a real opinion

Mat, moulding, glazing. We’ll tell you what we’d do with it, and what we’d talk you out of.

A framer checks every order

Including the ones that start online. If something won’t work, we call you before we build it.

Built by hand in Rochester

Usually ready in about 3 weeks. (need to confirm turnaround with Graham)

the Workshop

Every one of these started as a conversation across the counter.

the Studio

Jim and Alice Foster opened The Framer’s Workshop in 1983.

Four decades on, it still runs the same way: one piece at a time, by people who’d rather talk you out of the wrong frame than sell you one.

UV-filtering glazing

Acid-free conservation matboard

Why it lasts

Solid American hardwoods: walnut, oak, maple, ash

Museum-grade archival mounting

I brought in a watercolor I’d been carrying around in a tube for six years. Alice spent forty minutes with me on mat colors alone.

Diane K.

Rochester Hills

They framed my father’s service medals in a shadowbox. I cried when I picked it up. That’s all I can really say about it.

Margaret W.

Rochester

I’ve used them for every client delivery for three years. Consistent, archival, on time. I don’t shop around anymore.
